Hammer Creek Fishing Days
This outing is traditionally held in mid October. It is
held on the Salmon River at Hammer Creek campground near the town of Whitebird, Idaho. The
event's main attractions are the open steelhead season, an “unofficial” - but traditional - fishing
derby, and the Dutch Oven Dinner on Saturday night. The affair often draws several dozen boats
and two or three times as many members. Since activities always begin early Saturday morning,
most folks arrive on Friday afternoon. Nearly everyone overnights at the Hammer Creek
campground; however, there are a few alternative lodging choices available in the surrounding
area.
The river around Hammer Creek is not difficult to run; however, in late October water
levels in the Salmon are often quite low, so proper diligence is advised before setting out on the
river.
