Safety Boats for the Salmon River Jetboat Races
The WWA provides safety boats for the Salmon River Jetboat Races at
Riggins, Idaho in mid-April each year. Typically, a dozen or more safety boats
are needed, and the WWA normally provides a significant portion of these
craft. The races take place on Saturday and Sunday. Safety boat volunteers usually
arrive on Friday to train, scout their assigned area, and review action plans.
Many WWA members also attend a Friday afternoon barbeque sponsored by the race committee in Riggins.
The races are always exciting and generally provide some spectacular jetboat racing, with plenty of rapids to make things interesting and a few “calm” stretches
where the racers can really pour on the power. Barring serious accidents, this duty, while extremely
important and always serious, can provide a couple of relaxing, yet very entertaining, days on the
river.
