2005 Glenns Ferry Hog Fest

The Western Whitewater Association hosts an annual Hog Fest each year in Glenns Ferry, Idaho.  The event is held on a weekend in mid-March.  The 2005 Fest was held March 12 & 13.  Saturday was clear and sunny, but by mid-morning, the wind had kicked up with gusts exceeding 45 mph at times.  Those strong winds made running the canyon on Saturday afternoon rather exciting and harrowing.  However, the pig roast and potluck on Saturday night was a real treat and more than made up for the blustery day.  Sunday was beautiful with clear skies, temperatures nearing 60, and little or no wind.  Despite the high winds and a few encounters of the rock-kind on Saturday, it was another fun and memorable event.

On Saturday morning as groups began heading up the river, the weather was mild with a blue sky and a gentle breeze.  Photos L to R:  Approaching Castle Rock Rapids from below;  Up through Castle Rock;  Coming up out of Pilgrim Rapids

Many of the jetboaters tied up at the hole above Pilgrim Rapids to kick back and do a little sturgeon fishing.  As the day progressed, however, that gentle breeze began to feel more and more like a gale force wind.

The wind was blowing so hard that the tumbleweeds were rolling across the water and stacking up around the boats. Heading back through Castle Rock When we got back to Glenns Ferry Saturday afternoon the wind was still blowing to beat the band.

That's Castle Rock Rapids on the right, immediately above it, the channel is rather narrow with gravel bars on either side.  The main channel is highlighted by it's muddier water.

On the way back down river late Saturday afternoon, one of the boats got into a gravel bar above Castle Rock Rapids, lost power, and drifted into a pour-over adjacent to the main channel.

The disabled boat had to be left over night, but Sunday morning around 50 WWA members with a dozen boats returned to recover it.

A cable was connected to the bow and a portable winch was used to dislodge it from the rocks.

The recovery wasn't flawless; but after a couple hours of work, the disabled boat had been retrieved, towed across the river, and loaded on its trailer.
