2006 New Year's Day Run
The
New Year's Day Run is held each year on the Snake River in southwestern Idaho. The run is
from Walters Ferry up river through the infamous "Graveyard" stretch of the Snake to
Swan Falls Dam.
On the morning of the 2006 run, the participants were greeted by a beautiful sunrise
that led to a balmy winter day with temperatures in the mid-fifties and little or no wind. The
water level was above normal all day, with streamflow at 9,500 cfs at the start of the run,
increasing to above 13,000 cfs on the way back. Twenty-one jetboats took part and at the top of the run - "Rattlesnake Eddy"
- the members heralded the new year with toasts to the river gods:
- May your anchor always hold tight and the line remain attached to your boat!
- May your bottom remain free of creases and dents!
- May your stick never fail you!
- May your reverse gate allow you to stop and evaluate before you plunge head-long
into the unknown!
- May you always be courteous to rafters and others.
- May you never wake boats in the rocks.
- May your families always be safe.
- May you prosper in 2006 and enjoy good health.
- May each of your river trips be the best one ever.
- Happy New Year!!!
