2007 New Year's Day Run
The
New Year's Day Run is held each year on the Snake River in southwestern Idaho. The run is
from Walters Ferry up river through the infamous "Graveyard" stretch of the Snake to
Swan Falls Dam.
On the morning of New Year's Day 2007, it was cold and foggy. The river was
flowing at around 8,500 cfs at the start of the run, but had dropped to about 7,700 cfs by
the time the last participants returned to Walters Ferry.
The heavy fog delayed the start of the run and hampered the initial up river
progress. By using GPS tracks established on the pre-runs, group leaders were able to idle up
river through the fog. The going was slow; but just below Celebration Park (about 1/3 of the
way), the fog lifted and the run was back on schedule. About twenty-five boats took part and
upon reaching the top of the run, the sun came out and the participants toasted the new year.
